The Kindness Snippet Jar by D. Alber
Review by Kimberley Fatt
When I first heard of The Kindness Snippet Jar I was intrigued - I have used a pom pom jar as a reward system in class, so I thought it would be something like that. Whilst it’s similar in the way it encourages good behavior, the story also looks at what can happen when we are kind collectively and when we work together - which can result in creating something beautiful - which is represented in this book as a piece of art.
The story suggests to the reader that whilst doing kind things for others is great, "sometimes all it takes is doing something kind for someone right in front of you!" That really resonated with me – I find that as an adult, you can definitely miss how people are feeling right in front of you, when all they really need is a little bit of kindness. This is a great message to instil in young children.
I was very keen to use this story with my Year 3 and 4 class, as kindness is one of the core values of our school, I knew it would resonate with them - and it did. I think it’d also be great to use in junior classes, especially Years 1 and 2.
